In this engaging, off-the-wall memoir, Egan, a New Jersey restaurant owner, and journalist Pitzer tell the story of Egan's friendship with a member of North Korea's mission to the United Nations and Egan's subsequent adventures in unofficial diplomacy between the United States and North Korea. Egan frequently hosted North Korean diplomats at his "barbecue shack," Cubby's, and made several trips to North Korea. Thus he is able to convey behind-the-scenes information to readers. Egan's activism stemmed from his interest in American POWs in Vietnam, but readers also learn of his interactions with the Mafia and the FBI, not to mention North Korea and the restaurant business. His experience with North Korea, however, is the focus of the memoir and demonstrates the power that individual friendships formed across "enemy" lines can have. VERDICT Egan and Pitzer's down-to-earth language and irreverent style will appeal to readers looking for a funny, offbeat memoir about serious issues.

In 1996, I led a delegation of American businessmen to Pyongyang to try and pave the way for US business ventures in North Korea. Our team met with North Korean officials eager to make agreements and form economic ties, but the U.S. Treasury Dept. eventually rejected all of our proposals. On this trip, I also invited Red McDaniel, personal friend and advisor to Ross Perot, who was interested in gathering information about American POWs. I also brought Pennsylvania Senator Stewart Greenleaf who I was helping to deliver millions of dollars in humanitarian aid to the starving and struggling North Korean citizens. We helped open the door for private humanitarian aid to be delivered to North Korea.

Ever since the South Korean ship Cheonan went down last month, there have been questions about what caused the explosion. Did an exploding mine sink the ship? A human torpedo? What we know is that 46 sailors died. This tragedy is a chance to push diplomacy forward. If we had a U.S. ambassador in Pyongyang and one of their diplomats in Washington, we could push for answers. But we are still technically at war with North Korea. There could be thousands of mines in the waters around North Korea (like we have on the DMZ between the Koreas), but our militaries have no way of disclosing to each other where they are. It’s time to change that and prevent things like the sinking of the Cheonan in the future. Forty-six men lost their lives, and it didn’t need to happen.

I'm mugging for the camera on the way back from Pyongyang in 2005. In the foreground is Pennsylvania state Senator Stewart Greenleaf (with his head in his hands). I think I wore him out. I'd convinced him to come to make a trip with me to try and rescue the USS Pueblo, a spy ship the North Koreans captured in 1968. The idea was to launch the senator's run for governor with him triumphantly bringing our ship back to the U.S. My buddy Ambassador Han betrayed me, though, and the whole plan failed miserably. I nearly punched out a mid-ranking military guy while we were on the ship. On the brighter side, we visited an orphanage in Pyongyang that had benefitted from the senator's and my efforts to get millions of dollars in humanitarian aid sent to North Korea.

It wasn't like the FBI was paying my way to Pyongyang. They're a one-way street. They wanted me to gather intelligence for them, but when I went out of my way to get it, how did they support me? By conspicuously tailing me and the North Koreans everywhere we went. No wonder they call it counter-intelligence. A lot of good people in Hackensack helped pay for my second trip to North Korea, and in return they got a wreath or a tree and some holiday cheer.

In 1997 I took Nizar Hamdoun, the Iraqi ambassador to the U.N., and his family to a New York Giants football game with an ulterior motive. I had come up with a perfect scheme to defuse the threat of war between the U.S. and the regimes of Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il. The North Koreans would come clean about whether they had live American POWs left over from the Korean War, and if they had live Americans they'd hand them over to the Iraqis in exchange for oil, which Pyongyang desperately needed because they were under embargo. The Iraqis would do a favor for America by helping Americans held captive for decades in North Korea to finally return home to their families. Nobody in the Clinton Administration liked my plan, and Hamdoun backed away from it. But not before the ambassador and I discussed every detail while watching our daughters practice karate together every week in Hackensack. We also got a football signed by the Giants sent to Saddam.

NORTH KOREANS LIVING ISOLATED IN ENEMY TERRITORY

The only North Koreans in the United States are about a dozen or so officials sent to represent Pyongyang at the United Nations. They live in an apartment tower on Roosevelt Island, a low-rent piece of land in the middle of the East River that used to be an asylum. Pretty grim. I used to tell my buddy, Han Song Ryol, that "you guys found the piece of America that looks most like Pyongyang!" He didn't think it was funny.

Taking North Koreans to a New Jersey Nets game

This photo from January 1994 shows the first time North Korean ambassadors Ho Jong and Han Song Ryol ever came to Hackensack, New Jersey to enjoy the killer baby back ribs at Cubby's. I've got my arm around Ho Jong. Han's the chubby-faced one on the far right. Notice how they dress like FBI agents. Rodney Hampton and other members of the New York Giants escorted us to a basketball game. I told the North Koreans it was their "coming-out party." We got our little excursion covered by the Bergen Record. I figured if the North Koreans became less mysterious in the U.S., we were less likely to attack them.
